Asbestos is mostly harmless when left alone, but becomes dangerous if disturbed during repairs, renovations or restoration.
While once considered a valuable resource for its strength and insulation properties, asbestos was found to be dangerously toxic and is now banned in most countries. Asbestos can make up as little as 1% of construction materials, or as much as 100%.
As people experienced health issues, asbestos usage decreased significantly as better alternatives such as fiberglass replaced it. The problem became clear when doctors noticed an increase of lung cancer diagnoses among those who had worked around it.
When inhaled or ingested by humans, asbestos fibers become permanently lodged in lung tissue, causing chronic pulmonary diseases like asbestosis or mesothelioma.
Exposure is most dangerous with large quantities found during building demolition, but small doses over long periods are also harmful. A single fiber is so small it can’t be seen by the naked eye. If your home was built before 1980, there’s a good chance it contains these fibers.
